Strong Odor Forces American Airlines Flight to Make Emergency Return to Los Angeles
Passengers aboard an American Airlines flight experienced an unexpected disruption yesterday when their aircraft was forced to return to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff due to a concerning odor that permeated the cabin.

Flight 274, which departed LAX at 5pm local time on October 14 bound for New York’s JFK International Airport, was only minutes into its journey when crew members and passengers reported a “strong smell” throughout the aircraft. The situation escalated when pilots donned oxygen masks after detecting an unusual taste and smell in the cockpit.

According to FlightRadar24 tracking data, the Airbus A32 twin-jet executed a looping maneuver to return to its departure point, where it performed an emergency landing. Upon arrival, medical personnel evaluated seven passengers who had complained of nausea, though ABC7 News confirmed that none required hospitalization.
Responding to the incident, the Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft but detected no hazardous conditions. After receiving clearance, the plane was returned to service and departed on another flight several hours later.
In a statement to the Mirror, an American Airlines spokesperson addressed the incident: “American Airlines flight 274 with service from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK) returned to LAX shortly after takeoff due to reports of an odor in the cabin. The flight landed safely and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologise for the inconvenience.”
This incident follows a separate occurrence earlier this year when a Ryanair passenger, Sophie Brame, endured an unpleasant odor during her four-hour flight from Manchester to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. The 27-year-old discovered the source was a fellow passenger who had removed their shoes mid-flight, creating an uncomfortable experience for those nearby.
