Yes, you can include one companion on the same flight. If your companion is booked in a different reservation, you need to call American Airlines Reservations to link the two reservations.

Starting March 1, 2025, systemwide upgrades will be valid through the status membership year (ending March 31 of the following year). The sooner you choose a systemwide upgrade as a reward, the longer you have to use it.
Are systemwide upgrades transferable?
Yes, systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable, but may not be sold or bartered. The person using a systemwide upgrade does not need to be an AAdvantage member.
How do Instant Upgrades work?
If there is an eligible seat available in your preferred cabin, American will show you an instant upgrade offer with a price in cash and one in miles. If you’re willing to pay, you’ll be able to confirm your upgrade immediately.
When can I purchase an Instant Upgrade?
Instant upgrades can be purchased using cash any time before departure, while the miles option is only available up to 24 hours before departure. Only tickets booked directly through American are eligible.
Where can I find the upgrade list?
The upgrade list will be visible in the American Airlines app 12 hours before departure time. You can always contact reservations to ask about your position on the list.
Why didn’t I get upgraded when there are seats available?
American Airlines is a for-profit business and will try to sell all seats (including paid in-app upgrade offers) before making upgrade inventory available. Not all seats are available for complimentary upgrades.
How will I know if my upgrade clears?
If your upgrade is confirmed, American will send an email to the address in your AAdvantage profile to let you know you’ve been upgraded. You’ll also find confirmation on aa.com and in the American app.
What happens if I’m not upgraded before my flight?
If you’re not confirmed by check-in, American will automatically add you to the airport upgrade list. Seats may become available closer to departure time or at the airport.
